Initial Creo Configs + Start Templates

Where to find the templates, example libraries, and configuration files that ship with a standard Creo installation.

A standard Creo installation includes more than just the Creo applications. PTC also provides templates, example libraries, configuration files, and sample data that can be useful when setting up or standardizing a Creo environment.

For CAD administrators, these resources can be valuable starting points when developing company standards instead of creating everything from scratch.

Note: The exact files available may vary depending on your Creo version and which applications or components were installed.


Creo Configuration Files

Creo also includes a number of configuration files and default settings that control how the application starts and behaves. These files can define everything from general Creo options and interface settings to default locations for templates, libraries, and other company resources.

CAD administrators can use these files as a starting point when developing a standardized Creo environment. Creo supports multiple levels of configuration, allowing settings to be applied company-wide while still providing options for user-specific configuration where appropriate.

Start Parts and Object Templates

Creo includes standard templates for creating new models and drawings. These templates can contain predefined items such as:

  • Datum planes

  • Named views

  • Layers

  • Parameters

  • Units

  • Drawing views and other drawing setup information

PTC provides templates for several object types, including solid parts, sheet metal parts, assemblies, and drawings.

The standard templates are typically located under the Creo installation at:

<Creo Load Point>\Common Files\templates

Depending on the unit system selected during installation, Creo uses different default templates. For example, PTC provides separate inch/pound and metric part and assembly templates.

These PTC templates can also provide a useful reference when creating your organization's own start parts and templates.


Creo Intelligent Fastener (IFX) Library

Creo also includes standard content for Creo Intelligent Fastener (IFX).

The IFX library provides standard fastener data that Creo can use when placing items such as screws, washers, nuts, and dowel pins. PTC also provides configuration files that control portions of the fastener library and generated fastener models.

IFX content and configuration can typically be found beneath:

This library can be a useful starting point for organizations evaluating how they want to manage standard hardware in Creo.

Spec-Driven Piping Library and Sample Project

Creo Piping includes a substantial amount of sample Spec-Driven Piping data that can be used to understand how a piping library is structured.

PTC provides populated Master Catalog (MCAT) and Fitting Library data, along with sample project files used for specifications and design rules.

Common locations include:

The sample project includes examples of items such as:

  • Piping specifications

  • Auto-selection files

  • Fitting categories

  • Insulation data

  • Design rules

  • Master catalog data

  • Fitting models

PTC also provides sample piping models used by many of its Creo Help tutorials.

These examples can be extremely useful for understanding how the different Spec-Driven Piping files work together before developing a company-specific piping library.

Tip: Treat the PTC piping data as sample/reference content. PTC recommends working from a copy of its sample data when following its piping exercises rather than modifying the provided examples directly.

Material Library

Creo also provides a default material library containing example material definitions.

The default library can typically be found at:

<Creo Load Point>\Common Files\text\materials-library

PTC describes the included library as a small set of materials intended primarily to provide a template for creating your own material library.

For a company environment, CAD administrators can create a centralized material library and configure Creo to use it with the pro_material_dir configuration option.

Using PTC Content as a Starting Point

The libraries and templates included with Creo are not necessarily intended to represent your organization's final CAD standards. Instead, they can provide useful examples of how PTC expects these resources to be structured and configured.

Before building a custom library or template from scratch, it is worth reviewing the content already included with Creo.

For company-managed environments, we recommend keeping customized templates and libraries in a separate, controlled location rather than modifying the PTC installation files directly. Creo provides configuration options such as start_model_dir, pro_material_dir, and application-specific library paths that can be used to point users toward company-managed content.
