Downloading, Installing, and Updating Creo Parametric

An overview of downloading, licensing, installing, and updating Creo Parametric for node-locked and floating licenses.

This guide provides an overview of downloading, licensing, installing, and updating Creo Parametric.

The installation process differs depending on how Creo is licensed. Before getting started, determine which type of license your organization uses:

  • Node-Locked License — The license is assigned directly to a specific workstation.

  • Floating License — Licenses are provided to Creo workstations by a central PTC FlexNet License Server.

Use the appropriate section below to follow the process from license acquisition through installation and future updates.

Node-Locked Installation

A node-locked license is assigned to one specific computer and does not require a separate FlexNet License Server. The license is associated with the Host ID of the workstation where Creo will run.

1. Retrieve the License

Before installing Creo, obtain the node-locked license for the workstation.

You will need the Host ID of the computer where Creo will be installed. If you do not know the Host ID, see:

Once you have the Host ID, use PTC's Manage Licensing application to assign the appropriate Creo products to the workstation and retrieve the resulting license file. PTC's current Manage Licensing guide covers creating hosts, assigning products, and downloading license files.

Save the downloaded license file somewhere accessible on the workstation. You will provide it to the Creo installer later.

2. Download Creo Parametric

Download the desired Creo release from the PTC Software Download area.

PTC provides instructions for finding and downloading Creo installation media here:

Once downloaded, extract the installation media to a local or accessible network location.

From the root of the extracted installation files, run:

setup.exe

This launches the PTC Creo Installation Assistant. The Installation Assistant supports previously downloaded license files as well as installation and customization of Creo applications.

3. Install Creo Parametric

From the PTC Creo Installation Assistant:

  1. Select Install new software.

  2. Accept the required license and export agreements.

  3. Continue to the License Identification screen.

  4. Browse to or drag and drop your node-locked license file into the License Sources area.

  5. Verify that the license is recognized before continuing.

  6. Continue to the application-selection screen and select Creo Parametric.

  7. Review the installation location and available customization options.

  8. Select Install.

The PTC Installation Assistant can use a previously generated node-locked license file and determine the applications available from the entitlements in that license.

4. Review Installation Options

Before selecting Install, take a moment to review the applications and features being installed.

This is especially important if your organization uses optional Creo applications or extensions.

Important – Simulation Applications: If you plan to use Creo Simulate, Creo Ansys Simulation, or Creo Simulation Live, make sure the corresponding application checkbox is selected during the initial Creo installation. Configuring the license later through Reconfigure does not install missing simulation components.

5. Verify the Installation

Once installation is complete, start Creo Parametric and confirm that:

  • Creo launches without a licensing error.

  • The expected Creo license is obtained.

  • Required extensions and applications are available.

  • Your organization-specific configuration, templates, and libraries are available if applicable.

6. Updating Creo Later

When upgrading the workstation to a newer Creo release, first verify that your existing license supports the release you plan to install.

Creo licenses are generally backward compatible, meaning a license generated for a newer Creo release can support older releases. An older license, however, may need to be updated before it can license a newer Creo release.

Updating the Node-Locked License

If an updated license is required, retrieve the new node-locked license through PTC Manage Licensing.

If you need to apply a new node-locked license to an existing Creo installation, you can do so using Creo Reconfigure. For a typical Creo Parametric installation, Reconfigure can be found at a path similar to:

C:\Program Files\PTC\Creo <version>\Parametric\bin\reconfigure.exe

Reconfigure allows the existing installation to be updated with the new license file without reinstalling Creo.

Note: If you are installing a new Creo release anyway, the updated node-locked license can be provided during that installation. You do not need to reconfigure the older Creo installation first simply to perform the upgrade.

A typical node-locked upgrade process is:

  1. Review the system requirements and compatibility for the new Creo release.

  2. Retrieve and apply an updated node-locked license if required.

  3. Download the desired Creo installation media.

  4. Run setup.exe from the new installation media.

  5. Provide or verify the updated node-locked license.

  6. Install and configure the new Creo release.

  7. Verify your company configurations, templates, libraries, and integrations.

PTC's current Creo upgrade guidance recommends reviewing system compatibility, configurations, customizations, and connected products before deploying a new release.

Floating License Installation

A floating-license environment uses a central PTC FlexNet License Server to provide licenses to Creo workstations.

The overall workflow is:

License Server → FlexNet → Creo Workstations

The FlexNet server should be configured and able to serve the required licenses before Creo is deployed to users.

1. Prepare the License Server

Determine which computer will host the PTC FlexNet License Server.

Because the server license is associated with the server's Host ID, you will need that information when creating the license host through PTC.

Before installing FlexNet, also confirm that the server operating system and FlexNet version are supported.

2. Retrieve the License

Use the PTC Manage Licensing application to create or select the appropriate license host, assign your Creo products, and retrieve the floating license file.

Save the license file somewhere accessible from the license server.

3. Download Creo and FlexNet

A floating-license deployment requires two pieces of software:

Creo Parametric

Download the desired Creo installation media through PTC:

Download the currently supported PTC FlexNet Publisher installer:

PTC also maintains a compatibility matrix showing which FlexNet server versions support different Creo releases:

Checking this matrix is particularly important when installing a newer Creo release into an environment that already has an existing FlexNet server.

4. Install and Configure FlexNet

Install the PTC FlexNet License Server on the designated server and provide the floating license file retrieved from PTC.

The exact workflow depends on the FlexNet license-manager configuration being used. PTC maintains current installation and administration instructions through its FlexNet resources.

Once configured, verify that:

  • The PTC license service is running.

  • The PTC vendor daemon is running.

  • The license file is recognized.

  • The expected Creo license features are available.

  • Client workstations can communicate with the license server.

Do this before installing Creo on multiple client machines. It makes it much easier to distinguish a server problem from a workstation installation problem.

5. Install Creo Parametric

Once the FlexNet server is running, install Creo on the client workstation.

Run:

setup.exe

from the Creo installation media.

Then:

  1. Select Install new software.

  2. Accept the required agreements.

  3. Continue to License Identification.

  4. Enter your FlexNet license source.

A floating license source will typically use the format:

port@servername

For example:

7788@PTCLicenseServer

  1. Confirm that the license server is recognized.

  2. Continue to the application-selection screen.

  3. Select Creo Parametric and any required applications.

  4. Review Customize and Command Configuration.

  5. Select Install.

The PTC Installation Assistant can detect an existing license server and use that license source to determine the Creo applications available for installation.

Review Optional Applications

As with a node-locked installation, review all required application checkboxes before installing.

Important – Simulation Applications: If your organization uses Creo Simulate, Creo Ansys Simulation, or Creo Simulation Live, the required simulation applications must be selected during the initial installation.

6. Verify the Installation

Start Creo Parametric from a client workstation and confirm that:

  • Creo can communicate with the FlexNet server.

  • The expected base Creo license is obtained.

  • Required floating extensions are available.

  • Optional Creo applications are installed and accessible.

  • Organization-specific configurations are loading correctly.

If one workstation cannot obtain a license while other users can, the problem is more likely to be related to the affected workstation, its network connection, or its Creo configuration.

If nobody can obtain a license, begin troubleshooting at the FlexNet server.

7. Updating Creo and FlexNet Later

When upgrading Creo in a floating-license environment, there are three separate things to consider:

  1. The Creo application

  2. The Creo license file

  3. The FlexNet server software

These do not always need to be updated at the same time.

Step 1: Check FlexNet Compatibility

Before deploying the new Creo release, check whether your existing FlexNet version supports it:

PTC maintains this matrix specifically because newer application releases may require a newer FlexNet server.

Step 2: Update the Creo License

A license generated for an older Creo release may need to be updated before the newer release can obtain a license. PTC notes that newer Creo licenses are backward compatible, but older license files may not support newer application releases.

Retrieve the updated license through PTC Manage Licensing:

Then apply the new license file to the existing FlexNet server:

Tip: A new license file does not necessarily mean that the FlexNet software itself needs to be upgraded.

Step 3: Upgrade FlexNet if Required

If your existing FlexNet version is supported by the new Creo release, you can generally keep the current server software and update the license file as needed.

If the compatibility matrix indicates that the FlexNet version is too old, upgrade the license server software before deploying the new Creo release.

Step 4: Install the New Creo Release

Once licensing is ready:

  1. Download the new Creo installation media.

  2. Back up any company configurations and customizations that need to be retained.

  3. Run setup.exe from the new installation media.

  4. Connect the installer to your FlexNet server.

  5. Review the application and customization selections.

  6. Install the new Creo release.

  7. Test the new version before deploying it broadly.

PTC recommends checking system requirements, product compatibility, configurations, customizations, and integrations as part of a Creo upgrade.
